SEL Global Leadership Series: Education in a State of Emergency

  • Online Webinar Ottawa Canada (map)

October 7th 4pm - 5pm New York EDT; 10pm - 11pm Salzburg CEST; 7am - 8am Melbourne AEDT (next day)

As leaders and educators, our schools, districts and systems have experienced differing levels of ongoing disruption across our world, from uncertainty within a school setting to a complete transition to virtual or distance delivery of education. What impact might these ongoing environments of uncertainty and stress have on our students, staff and communities?

As humans we have evolved to respond to acute stress, yet as the pandemic drags on, a general fatigue has set in with chronic stressors and our “surge capacity” greatly diminished. Uncertainty and disruption have been consistent characteristics of crisis and conflict areas across the globe with much research and work trying to determine the ways to best support learning, safety, and human development through education.

Join us for this one-hour webinar, where we synthesise insights from diverse contexts when Anja Nielsen (Senior Policy Advisor, Unicef, UK), and Carine Allaf (Senior Policy Advisor, Qatar Foundation International, USA), join Louka Parry (Karanga Executive, Australia) to share their thoughts on the following questions:

  1. What has been learned from conflict and crisis contexts that can help all young people universally?

  1. What are the strategies school and district leaders can use to provide psycho-social support to students and staff so that learning can effectively take place?

  2. What are the tangible ways that leaders can create environments that help students and staff thrive in times of long-term uncertainty?
