Welcome to the 2020 Karanga Newsletter Part 1

Hello and welcome to the first Karanga newsletter,

More than anything we hope that you are all safe and well in these challenging times.

You are receiving this because you registered for updates on Karanga’s work and are part of a growing community of educators around the world who recognize how important social and emotional learning and life skills are to young people's education and their futures. From June 2020 this will be a monthly newsletter, by and for the Karanga community.  If you are involved in SEL and Life Skills work that you would like us to feature in the newsletter then please let us know at contact@karanga.org and we will do our best to include it in future newsletters. If for any reason you do not want to receive this newsletter then you can unsubscribe at the bottom of the page.

Karanga grew out of a series of programs on Social and Emotional Learning organised by Salzburg Global Seminar.   Our name is a Māori term, meaning a call out in welcome and we hope that our karanga will be heard by educators, researchers, parents and policymakers around the world who share our belief that education needs to focus much more on the acquisition and development of social and emotional skills and competencies.

We look forward to sharing and learning with you all over the months and years ahead.

A full recording of the first conference is available on the Karanga Global YouTube channel here  Both parts of the conference have have a time stamped contents list in the video description if you are looking for a specific discussion or speaker.

Meet the Karanga Steering Committee

Karanga is a global alliance, with a small executive committee and a growing steering committee of SEL experts from around the world. Each month in the newsletter we will focus on the work of one steering committee member or organisation.

This month we would like to highlight the work of Professor Stephanie Jones and the Harvard EASEL Lab's Explore SEL project Explore SEL is designed as a navigator for the field of social and emotional learning. The website provides information and tools that summarize and connect the major frameworks and skills in SEL to support transparency and informed decision-making.

The 74 published a great article about Explore SEL at the beginning of May that describes the site really well.

Karanga's 'North Star' Quote of the Month

This is one of the ideas that has helped shape Karanga's mission in a profound and fundamental way.  It feels especially important at the moment.

'Education is the point at which we decide whether we love the world enough to assume responsibility for it' - Hannah Arendt
